| Dùsgadh Fir Na Bainnse - Patrick Molard |
| Patrick Molard is regarded as one of Brittany's leading pipers; in Dùsgadh Fir Na Bainnse (The Waking Of The Bridegroom) he shows us why, with a programme of classical ceòl mòr, or piobaireachd. Incidentally, says Patrick in his sleeve notes, he has never heard anyone play the title track before, so that alone makes this CD something of a collector's item.
The tune in question is believed to have been composed by Ranald MacDougall, piper to MacDougall of Lunga, and Patrick plays it on a set of pipes he bought from my good friend the late Bert Barron of St Andrews, teamed with a chanter made by Murray Henderson of Kirriemuir.
Other works featured include "Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel's Salute"; "Clan Ranald's Salute"; "A Prelude" by John MacDonald of Inverness, teacher of both Bob Brown and Bob Nicol, who taught Patrick; and "Lament For The Only Son", attributed to Patrick Mòr MacCrimmon, or maybe John MacIntyre.
This is a sumptuous feast of piobaireachd by a true master, with the bonus of Patrick's biography in English, French, Gaelic
and (I guess) Breton. |
