| In Scotland’s Homecoming Year — a phenomenon which provoked some ridicule as well as the anticipated sentiment — Mod Gold Medallist Fiona J. Mackenzie has compiled A Good Suit of Clothes, a round dozen tracks recalling the Scottish Diaspora. Emigrant song has long been a feature of the Gaelic oral tradition, and the album reflects this with songs from post-Jacobite Uprising to the 20th century, and charting voyages to North America and the Antipodes.
A beautifully-presented collection, which features not just the voices of Fiona, plus Darren Maclean, Cathy Ann MacPhee, Katie Mackenzie and Sineag Macintyre, but also the instrumental talents of Irvin Duguid, Fraser Fifield, Mary Ann Kennedy, James Mackintosh, Anna Massie, Ed McFarlane, Clare Sterling, Robert McFall,
Su-a Lee, Jane Atkins, Ian Muir, Guy Nicolson and Simone Welsh.
There is also a recording of composer Archie Mackenzie of Nova Scotia singing his own song at a ceilidh in Eriskay on his first-ever visit to his forefathers’ land. |
