Belonging - Highland Heartbeat
Belonging is offered by Highland Heartbeat, a group of musical luminaries, starting with the late Calum Kennedy’s daughter Fiona, and also featuring Jillian Isbister, Maureen McMullan, Daisy Chute, Jim Malcolm, and a young singer from Skye bearing the most mangled surname in Scotland: Darren Maclean (or McLean, or MacLean – choose your website). The group have featured on TV in the US, and have received standing ovations in Eden Court in Inverness. From this showing, it’s not hard to see why, with tracks ranging from “The Kist” – co-written by Fiona, and depicting the chest of necessities and precious mementoes going to the New World with Highland emigrants – to classics like “Loch Lomond” and “Auld Lang Syne”, plus Phil Cunningham’s anthem, “Raise The Flag For Scotland”. Scots of a certain age will also instantly recall “Down In The Glen”, made so famous by Robert Wilson that it seemed it was never off the wireless in the early 1950s. A powerful collection for anyone with Scottish blood, no matter how diluted by decades in Nova Scotia, Otago, or the US.
