Bel Canto - Eilidh Mackenzie
Bel Canto is not exactly the sort of phrase you expect to hear bandied about on the Staffin Road; but the release from Macmeanmna and Eilidh Mackenzie is not in the same league as stout tenors with corkscrew moustaches, except for one detail: the singing is just as good, if not better. The title is actually from the 2001 novel by award-winning US author Ann Patchet, whose themes of love, music, identity, language and communication have been translated into Gaelic (and song) by Eilidh, who is accompanied on this album by guest singers like Michael Marra, Elizabeth MacCormack, James Graham, Anna Meldrum, Eddi Reader and Fiona’s sisters Gillian and Fiona ‘Gress’ Mackenzie. With a line-up like this, plus a repertoire of mankind’s eternal preoccupations, considered against the narrative backdrop of a diva’s capture by terrorists, how could it fail?
