Maidean Dubh’ an Donais - Dr Angus MacDonald
Maidean Dubh’ an Donais (The Black Sticks Of The Devil) refers to the ebony (or similar) components of the Great Highland Bagpipe, here played in consummate style by no less a virtuoso than Dr Angus MacDonald. Tunes featured are by just about everybody who is or was anybody, not least Dr Angus’ brothers Allan and Iain, and tunes arranged by Dr Angus or even named by him, like the “Pipes of St Valery” with their tragic story of the 51st Division and the even more tragic story of their final fate. Throughout this album the black sticks are truly in the hands of a master – but nobody needs me to tell them that. No piper, whether accustomed to treading the boards with the elite at Cowal or sitting at home pretending to finger grace-notes on a pencil, should miss this one.
