The Scots Magazine has a requirement for high-quality colour pictures taken in Scotland. The preferred formats are 35 mm and 6 x
4.5, but other rectangular formats can be considered. Transparencies are best, but prints are acceptable if the image is sharp enough. Our pictorial
needs are:
The front cover
vertical shot of a Scottish scene, with a human element in the picture. The Scots Magazine logo is placed in the
top left corner and this should not interfere with any important part of the picture.
Single-page pictures, inside
vertical shots similar to above, but no particular need for a human element or space to be considered
for positioning the logo.
Photo Features
often up to 8 pages in length, our photo features capture the essence of an area of Scotland, or have a linking
theme which may include places, people, flora and fauna. We avoid the type of pictures which are clichés. We look for
something with a difference, something with that extra-special ingredient that gives individuality to the picture.
Initially, aspiring contributors should submit no more than 24 pictures for consideration. Digital images should be low-resolution
jpgs. High-resolution versions will be requested when work is accepted. Technical details (F-Stop, speed etc) are not required, but accurate captions
are essential.
Calendar
horizontal shots of very high quality, showing places in Scotland. All seasons. Medium format transparencies are best,
but 35mm can be accepted as long as the image is perfectly sharp.
Digital Images
We prefer Tiff format, but JPEG is acceptable. We require a minimum resolution of 300dpi. Images can be sent in
on CD or Zip disk Please enclose a stamped addressed envelope for return post.
