A-Z of Secret Dundee: Estuary

Looking across the estuary to Broughty Ferry

The Tay Estuary is home to dolphins, seals and a huge variety of birdlife and wildlife – and it’s right on Dundee’s doorstep.

One of the best ways to explore a scenic part of it is by bike. The Guardian newspaper described the coastal cycle path between Dundee and Arbroath as, “one of Britain’s best bike rides,” and we certainly wouldn’t disagree. Most of the 19 mile route is flat and off-road on shared paths for walkers and cyclists giving you plenty of time to relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery.

At Broughty Ferry you pass the ancient castle before lapping up the coastline all the way to Monifieth. At Carnoustie, you even cycle alongside a championship golf course.

The picturesque village of Easthaven is another great pit-stop and photo opportunity. Look out for the Mary’s Meals honesty box at the start of the village where you can refuel on orange juice and homemade biscuits for a donation.

Sample Smokies straight from the barrel

At Arbroath you can treat yourself to some mouth-watering Smokies straight from the barrel and sit by the bustling harbour. If you don’t fancy the return journey then you can always catch a train back to Dundee. Stagecoach also run a special bike friendly bus serving Aberdeen to Dundee called the Coastrider X7 which stops in Arbroath.
