A Write Highland Hoolie’s Children’s Competition Winners

One of Scotland’s newest book festivals showcased new talent with a children’s writing competition

A Write Highland Hoolie book festival was held in Mallaig last month. It’s only in its second year, but already it has become one of the best wee festivals in Scotland.

The Scots Magazine was official media partner of the fun event, and our editor, Robert, was tasked with the difficult job of judging the children’s writing competition.

He said, “The standard was incredible – it was a tougher gig than I’d imagined. I agonised over what turned out to be some very difficult decisions – especially when it was clear entrants had poured their hearts and souls into their work.”

The theme for the competition was ‘My Highland Home’ and local kids from primary one all the way up to sixth year took part.

“The standard was exceptionally high – there were some fantastic entries from very talented young people. It was a lot of fun reading them – some of them are very funny and all are incredibly well-written. Well done to everyone who took part.”

The competition’s four age categories were P1-4; P5-7; S1-3 and S4-6. You can find the winning and runner-up entries on the links below.
