Doune Castle

Thrust into our living rooms and onto our bucket lists by Outlander, Doune Castle has long been one of my favourite Scottish castles.

It’s a proper fortress – brooding, strong, seemingly impregnable but with a practical layout it pretty much meets my definition of a classic castle in every way.

The Great Hall is my favourite room within Doune, where you can almost hear the clamour and din of meal times past.

Full exploration of the interior will be richly rewarded and the views from the castle’s roof are well worth the ascent.

It has also starred in Game of Thrones and, memorably, in Monty Python which makes it something of a medieval A-lister.
