  • Scottish school teacher Sir James Murray created the Oxford English Dictionary with help from a murderer. William Chester Minor sent his contributions to the project from a cell at Broadmoor Asylum.

  • ABBA were inspired by Scottish band, Middle Of The Road. Agnetha Faltskog was such a fan of the group, who are most famous for their Number One hit Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, that she recorded cover versions of their songs in Swedish.

  • West Highland White Terriers were created in the 1800s when Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch, Argyllshire, mistook his favourite cairn terrier for a rabbit and shot it. He subsequently decided to breed white dogs that would be easier to see.
