From David Coulthard in the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 car to power laps by Top Gear’s The Stig and an opening lap by Jimmy McRae, himself a five times British Rally Champion, in his son Colin’s world championship winning rally car, Glasgow is set to ignite with speed this summer.

As well as paying homage to some of the world’s finest motor sporting heroes, Ignition Festival of Motoring, which is from August 5-7, will showcase all aspects of motoring. It will even close roads around the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre and SSE Hydro Arena to create Glasgow’s first ever street circuit.

“Scotland is steeped in motor sport heritage, with champions on two, three and four wheels,” said Jimmy McRae at the press launch of the upcoming festival, which will includeg a collection of Colin McRae’s rally cars. “I’m looking forward to getting behind the wheel on the Street Circuit – it will really bring the event to life and give the audience a unique experience.”

‘Jimmy inaugurating the circuit in Colin’s 555 Subaru WRC winning car will be a very special moment’

Event Director Jeremy Vaughan added: “It’s an honour to have Jimmy on board. Jimmy won the British Rally Championship five times and still competes today in historic rallying – he really is a legend. Jimmy inaugurating the circuit in Colin’s 555 Subaru WRC winning car will be a very special moment for the event and the city.”

Scotland’s own F1 star David Coulthard will take to the specially-constructed Street Circuit in the Red Bull Racing RB7, giving fans a unique opportunity to see and hear a Formula 1 machine up close. And there will be further track action from a wild selection of race, rally and supercars – as well as bikes – to make 5-7 August one of the most exciting weekends on this year’s motoring calendar.

The most exciting, ambitious and complex motor show ever to be staged in Scotland

Ignition will be the most exciting, ambitious and complex motor show ever to be staged in Scotland and is organised by the team behind Top Gear Live.

“Scotland’s rich heritage and passion for motorsport coupled with Glasgow’s proven ability to stage world leading events makes it the perfect location for our innovative Ignition Festival of Motoring,” said Jeremy Vaughan.

Track action will be complemented by displays of iconic cars, such as those on display at the press launch, which included a Lamborghini Huracan and Ferrari 458 Spider.

The finest supercars and hypercars

The Top Gear Live Stunt team will inject further thrills into Ignition as they bring excitement and flair to the live action zone while a Supercar Pavillion will display the finest supercars and hypercars.

Further displays will include a Motor Sport Hall, a Motorbike Hall featuring everything from superbikes and café racers to sports touring bikes and custom cruisers and a Classic and Vintage Hall filled with machines from the great marques of the past as well as lovingly restored classics from car club members.
