You can’t really go wrong with Vibram soles, and this together with the extra padding around the ankle makes for one comfortable and supportive boot.

The leather needs the usual few days breaking in, as you’d expect – and it does squeak pretty badly to begin with! After a few (admittedly rough) hikes, I noticed nicks in the leather of the toes, which was a little disappointing.

The IsoDry membrane and Nubuck leather keep feet perfectly dry, but those who hike regularly in wet or rough conditions might prefer Excalibur’s sister-boot, the Breacon, in full-grain leather.
